A wet, but fun, Unity Day

Borrowed Planet had a stall at Unity Day in Hyde Park in Leeds on 1 August.

It hardly stopped raining all day, but fortunately Borrowed Planet had borrowed a Tipi so we had shelter from the rain.

Despite the rain we had a good day and met a few new people who are interested in getting involved. We had activities for kids – and there was plenty more for them to do too – we were next to the (free) swings and bouncy castle – so they spent much of their time on that.

Our next get-together is Sunday 9th August – a picnic at Kirstall Abbey from 1pm. We’d love to see you there if you’d like to come along – more info here.

We liked this video interview with US environmentalist Bill McKibben. Here’s a taste of what he says:

I’ve mostly given up being either optimistic or pessimistic. Our odds of success are not incredibly good, but I wake up every day saying “What can I do to change the odds some?”. And it’s not impossible, the task that we have ahead. We’re not going to stop global warming, but slowing it to the point that we can cope with it remains within the realms of possibility. “Fun” is not quite the right word, but there is something deeply satisfying about trying. It’s the biggest challenge that humans have ever gotten to take part in. It’s exciting to be part of that. To be doing something that crucial is a great honour.”

Meeting Ed Miliband

A few Borrowed Planet members went along to an event in Doncaster on Saturday with local MP and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband.

Events coming up

We’ve got a few events planned for the coming months:

Saturday 11th July – a few of us are going to Doncaster to lobby the Secretary of State in the Department for Energy and Climate Change (and new dad!) , Ed Miliband. Please contact us at info@borrowedplanet.org.uk if you’re interested in coming.

Sunday 9th August, 1pm - a picnic at Kirkstall Abbey – sunshine’s been guaranteed, so join us for a picnic, the odd bit of chat about climate change, and plenty of frisbee and football action. Just bring some food – and contact us at info@borrowedplanet.org.uk to let us know you’re coming (so we can get in touch on the day if it’s raining)

Saturday 19th September, 2pm – a Q and A with a climate change expert at All Hallows Church in Hyde Park, Leeds – with kids’ activities too. Please contact us at info@borrowedplanet.org.uk if you’d like to come (particularly so we can plan the kids’ activities).

We’ve also got an event planned for the autumn where we’ll be searching Leeds for wild fruit – and making our own juice there and then! We’ll tell you more soon….

Borrowed Planet is now up and running!

Borrowed Planet launched with a showing of The Age of Stupid at All Hallows Church in Leeds on 5th July.

More than 30 adults and 20 children came along. The adults watched the film and the children enjoyed a range of activities, including creating a banner for the Borrowed Planet group.
